University of Johannesburg School appoints new Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Coordinator

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Ms Akhona Melani as the new Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Coordinator for the University of Johannesburg School of Tourism and Hospitality. With her expertise in connecting students with industry opportunities, Ms Melani will facilitate placing our third-year Tourism Development and Food and Beverage Operations students in WIL positions.

During the WIL period from July to November 2023, our students will embark on an exciting journey, completing 400 hours of practical experience that will bridge the gap between theory and practice. This invaluable opportunity will provide industry exposure and hands-on learning, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary for success.

As the WIL coordinator, Ms Akhona Melani will coordinate placements and foster strong relationships with industry partners. Her dedication ensures a seamless and rewarding experience for students and host organizations. Ms Melani will work closely with our partners to explore potential placement opportunities and match students’ skills and interests to industry needs.

We sincerely appreciate the support and commitment to the education and development of future leaders in the vibrant tourism and hospitality industry. Together, let us create a transformative learning environment that inspires and prepares students for successful careers in their chosen fields.

Work Integrated Learning Programme

Third year students completing their National Diploma in Event Management at Tshwane University of Technology, Cape Peninsula University and Central University of Technology are currently looking for work placement as part of a Work Integrated Learning programme.
The students are required to work under the guidance of an experienced industry professional and achieve specific learning objectives over a six-month period. There is no expectation that the students should be paid since this work placement is an integral part of their studies, but depending on your requirements, it may be appropriate to pay a stipend to cover any additional travel or other costs they incur.
Designated individuals who take on a student will also earn CPD credits necessary to maintain their designation. If you are interested in taking on a student, please contact:

UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG WORK INTEGRATED EDUCATION 2022

At the UJ STH we are once again at the start of a new academic year and are feeling extremely excited about the tourism and hospitality industries once again resuming regular business.

This year, we are embarking on a switch from Work Integrated Learning (WIL) to Work Integrated Education (WIE). The purpose of WIE is to exposure all students at every level of study to the industry so that they can apply their theoretical knowledge, build confidence, and begin thinking about potential career/entrepreneurship paths.  For us to successfully implement WIE for our students, we need the help of our industry partners to join us in grooming our students and in preparing them for the world of work. In doing so, we are calling on industry members who would be interested in joining us this semester (starting end February) in the following capacities:

Mentors (group or individual mentorship)

Guest lecturers

Providers of industry-based projects

Providers of case studies for students to work on

The hosting of field trips

We are aware that you are extremely busy and can assure that you we will assist however possible to ensure that this does not take too much of your time.

Understand your legal rights and obligation when it comes to POPIA, Intellectual Property, Trademarks and Competition Law.

Tyrone Moore from Moore Attorney will provide you with practical advice on understanding your rights and obligations with regards to brand protection, trademarks, domain names, copyrights and concept protection.

Riaan Viljoen from Viljoen Attorneys will share practical knowledge on how to align your internal processes in keeping with the new POPIA law, which has just been signed. In addition, Riaan will provide you with insight on how to ensure that your commercial agreements, exhibitor contracts and service level agreements are readily accessible and easily interpreted.

NOVEMBER – Leadership and Management: Learn to tap into your brain using neuroscience methodologies to create permanent change so you can create team synergy.

All courses are open to anyone who is keen on developing their skills in the exhibition and events space. Due to the popularity of the classes, registration will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that AAXO members will receive a preferential registration fee.

Celebrating our Successes and Looking Ahead

2019 has been an exciting year for AAXO. Not only did we kick off the year celebrating our Members and the amazing work they do in the exhibition space at the AAXO ROAR Awards and Exhibition of Exhibitions, we also managed to grow the members into new territories and profiles.

AAXO hosted several well-supported networking events, in association with South African Tourism and EXSA, in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town – and there’s more to come! We represented Africa at the Indian Exhibition Industry Association annual conference and exhibition held in Delhi, India and we will be attending the IAEE’s Expo Expo in Vegas this December; to top it off, we appointed a new Board of Directors, Chairperson and Vice Chair.

We’re already getting excited for 2020 as we reach the final stages of our planning. Members can look forward to CEM training launched through AAXO in the new year. CEM – Certified in Exhibition Management, is an internationally recognised qualification for professionals in the exhibition and events industry.We’re excited to bring this world-class training programme to our members to help them learn and grow, and to assist in developing talent in our sector. The CEM designation is synonymous with thought leadership, innovation, industry recognition and growth opportunities. We encourage both members and individuals to register now.

 

 

 

AAXO ROAR Awards dinner

We’re also working hard on the 007 themed AAXO ROAR Awards 2020, which will be held alongside the EXSA-LLENCE awards on the 31st of January 2020 at the Gallagher Convention Centre. Entries are open and we encourage our members and their exhibitors to enter and seize the recognition they deserve.

UFI announces the third annual “Global Exhibitions Day”

With 4.4 million exhibitors, 260 million visitors and 98 billion € (109 billion US $) being spent

With 4.4 million exhibitors, 260 million visitors and 98 billion € (109 billion US $) being spent by the them combined annually, the exhibition industry is thriving globally. Approximately 31,000 exhibitions take place each year (not including fun fairs, farmer fairs etc.), creating 680,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs within the exhibition industry and maintaining or creating 1.8 million FTE positions in other ‘tourism related’ industries, such as transport, accommodation, food and beverage etc.

In recent years, additional venue space has become available in almost all regions of the world. UFI World Map of Exhibition Venues released in 2017 indicated that the total indoor exhibition space worldwide has now reached 34.8 million sqm and the number of venues has reached 1,212. When compared to the last census produced in 2011, this shows a 1.4% net increase in terms of the number of venues and 7.7% increase in terms of exhibition space. In addition to adding new space, many venue operators have also made significant investments to upgrade their existing venue capacities. These venue investments underline the positive outlook for the exhibition industry mid to long term.
