FAME Week Africa 2022 supporting Cape Town’s creative industries
RX Africa’s creative and cultural industry show, FAME Week Africa provides a platform for creatives, brands, organisations and policymakers to connect with each other in order create more business opportunities to strengthen the creative industry, and by doing so helping economies thrive.
“In order to ensure the success of the creative and cultural industry, investment in future generations is needed. FAME Week Africa takes place in the Host City of Cape Town and we have partnered with Cape Town based Bridges Academy, Emerging Artists Programme, and ikasi Creative Media, to give their leaders and participants an opportunity to fast track their careers by attending the content sessions, workshops and networking events, says Martin Hiller, Marketing, Content + Creative Director of FAME Week Africa.
BRIDGES ACADEMY: BRIDGING THE GAP
Located in the heart of South Africa’s oldest township, Langa, Bridges Academy is rooted in the rich musical history of the area, offering unemployed youth from under-resourced communities an inspiring and safe environment with access to world-class technology, mentorship and education designed to help them thrive in the world, equipping students with the necessary technical skill and mindset to obtain employment or become a successful entrepreneur.
“A majority of the talent showcased at FAME this year will be from Bridges,” says Hiller. “We have been working with Bridges’ alumni, Bonga Kwana, an incredible talent, to promote the incredible work that the academy is doing and cannot wait to get to showcase more African talent.
Select students from Bridges Academy will be attending the Muziki Africa content sessions and workshops at FAME Week Africa – to be inspired, network and have career changing conversations.
FAME Week Africa will also be hosting an online auction with Bridges to raise much needed funds for the academy. More details on this will be coming soon.
THE EMERGING ARTIST EXHIBITION: V&A WATERFRONT TO COME ALIVE
The Emerging Artists Programme is a City of Cape Town, Arts and Culture Branch initiative and is aimed to assist emerging artists based in Cape Town to build capacity and access opportunities that will assist in promoting their work and developing their profession. This year, through FAME Week Africa, the Emerging Artists Programme will select 25 Visual Artists to participate in a capacity building and training workshop as well as a two-week exhibition at the Centre Court at the V&A Waterfront, from 9 August to 22 August, and then, at FAME Week Africa. The exhibition will be co-curated alongside The Justice Desk’s A Girl with a Dream exhibition.
IKASI CREATIVE MEDIA: A VOICE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
The art of storytelling gives a powerful voice to a generation. Today, moving pictures have taken on a whole new digital dimension, which spans across industries. ikasi Creative Media, offers rural youth Digital Media Content Creator programmes, accredited training, online support, mentorship and an incubator programme that delivers content to broadcasters all with the aim to ignite job creation and entrepreneurial thinking in the African creative economy.
“iKasi Creative is a non-profit organisation committed to reaching out to rural youth with industry linked training in audio-visual and digital media. By working at grassroots level with unemployed youth the organisation helps businesses in media have a meaningful impact on the lives of NEETS – youth that are not in employment, education or training,” says Hiller.
During FAME Week Africa, businesses can meet face to face with iKasi to explore partnerships to reach more young creatives in rural areas in South Africa. There are currently 25 youth in an digital media content creator incubator. These students are from the West Coast, Cape Town, Worcester and the Garden Route. They will have the opportunity to attend the MIP Africa content sessions and workshops at FAME Week Africa. Three iKasi student films will also be screened as part of the MIP Africa screenings.
